When you've lived here all your life but failed to ever wonder down a footpath that's within 5 miles of your doorstep. Is one of the pleasantly surprising features of these areas in Cornwall.
….Is the question we often ask ourselves each and every Winter. Escape the winter temperatures and fly to Australia or somewhere hot. However, you risk leaving behind the British winter swells.
Where in the world can you literally surf everyday for a prolonged period ? Theres not many places…
Here in Cornwall we are lucky to have the choice of two coastlines that run side by side with plenty of swell throughout the Winter months. Yes it's chilly but man up ! Winter wetsuits these days are amazingly warm and flexible. Thats sold it for me. I know what I'm doing…..
Not the best weather the last few days but the surf has delivered. We are still open and will be teaching throughout Christmas and New year.
Some moody colours but perfectly imperfect
Here we have Chris during one of his lessons at Smart Surf School. Chris partook in a 5 day course and as you can see from the video, he did pretty good.
Slow motion is a great way to analyse intricate details to technique and style.
Sennen saw perfect 3 foot peaks as the tide pushed for the semi finals of the Sennen Surf Comp Open.
Last years champ Seb Smart was licking his lips at the aerial opportunities buy will have to cross swords with some early stand outs with the likes of Isaac Marshall, Connor Stratton Darling, Matt Travis, Nick Tiscoe, Jonno Waugh, Jake Sage, Sam Smart and long boarder Sam Bleakly.
£500 cash was up for grabs for first prize although the prize money wasn't a priority as the waves were getting better, the sun was continuing to shine and spirits were high as local Sennen businesses joined forces to create an old school community vibe that can often get lost in competitive business as people mingled and joked in the Sun. A great effort from the Ben Tunnacliff, Sennen Surf Centre and the Smart Surf School who all sponsored the event and made it what it was.
The final consisted of former European longboard champ Sam Bleakly, last years SSS winner, Seb Smart, 2014 Senior British Nationals runner up Sam Smart,Former Junior British team member Isaac Marshal and wild card Nick Tiscoe. To say it was stacked is an under statement.
Sam Smart got off to a good start posting the highest heat score but couldn't get a second wave to back it up. Seb Smart bust a radical superman air, Isaac pulled off a nice 360 and Nick was working the clean rights just before the tide got too high and the competitors found them selves paddling around in circles, scratching for anything they could pick up….
So it was Sam Bleakly who took the win ! With his longboard Sam was able top pick up the backing off waves all the way from the outside and ride them cleanly all the way to the beach. Long nose rides and smooth turns won the judges attention.
1st Sam Bleakly
2nd Isaac Marshall
3rd Seb Smart
4th Sam Smart
5th Nick Tiscoe
Well done everyone involved and thank you for a great event !!
A short video to capture the end of season vibes here at the Smart surf School.
